About the Book
Alternative Energy Systems in Building Design is intended primarily as a design reference book for engineers, architects, scientists, managers, and college students. This book could also be supplemented as a teacher’s reference for use in undergraduate and graduate courses.
The primary objective of this book is to provide the reader with a practical design reference manual for the design and implementation of the most commercially viable alternative energy technologies. Given the unprecedented global demand for photovoltaic co-generation systems, this book covers a wide range of solar physics, related technologies, and practical design guidelines for professionals who must be responsible for all aspects of solar project design.
The design guidelines discussed in this book reflect my personal experience as a consulting engineer and educator. Material on fusion reactors is also included. Although fission reactors are not considered an alternative energy technology, they are intended to serve as a reference for comparison with the details of fusion reactors.
In writing this publication, I have endeavored to incorporate all significant alternative energy technologies. In the process, I made extensive use of previous publications and published articles from the Department of Energy (DOE), the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), web resources such as Wikipedia, and many contributors (who are cited and acknowledged throughout this document).
