Technically, mechanical engineering is the application of engineering principles and problem-solving techniques to the marketplace for any object, from design to manufacture. Mechanical engineers use the principles of motion, energy, and force to analyze work and ensure that designs function safely, efficiently, and reliably, all at a competitive cost.

Mechanical engineers make a difference. That’s because a career in mechanical engineering focuses on creating technologies that meet human needs. Virtually every product or service in modern life will have been modified in some way by mechanical engineers to help mankind.

This includes solving today’s problems and creating future solutions in medicine, energy, transportation, world hunger, space exploration, climate change, and more.

Working on issues and innovations in a variety of fields means that a mechanical engineering education is versatile. To meet these broad demands, mechanical engineers may design components, machines, systems, or processes. The scope ranges from the macro to the micro, from large systems such as auto mobiles and satellites to the smallest components such as sensors and switches. Anything that needs to be manufactured, that is, anything that has moving parts, requires the expertise of a mechanical engineer.

About the Book

This text book is intended for first and second year students in a typical college program in mechanical engineering or a related field. Throughout the following chapters, we have attempted to provide a balanced treatment of technical problem-solving skills, design, engineering analysis, and modern technology.

The book begins by describing mechanical engineers, what they do, and what impact they can have (Chapter 1). The seven “elements” of mechanical engineering are then highlighted in Chapters2 (mechanical design), 3 (professional practice), 4 (forces in structures and machines), 5 (materials and stresses), 6 (fluid engineering), 7 (heat and energy systems), and 8 (motion and power transmission).

Applications encountered in the process include sustainable urban infrastructure, virtual and rapid prototyping, nanomachines, internal combustion engines, robotics, sports technology, magnetic resonance imaging, advanced materials, jet engines, micro fluidic devices, automatic transmissions, renewable energy.

What should we learn from this textbook? First of all, you will learn what kind of profession mechanical engineers are, what kind of work they do, and what technical, social, and environmental challenges they solve with the technology they produce. Section 1.3 details a “Top10” list of the achievements of mechanical engineers.

This list will help you recognize how the engineering profession has contributed to your daily life and to society in general around the world. Second, you will see that engineering is a practical endeavor aimed at designing things that work, cost less to manufacture, are safe to use, and have a positive impact on the environment.
