Climate and Land Degradation- for free

Climate

Land degradation is a threat to natural resources with implications for food security, poverty, and environmental and political stability. Climate extremes (e.g., heat waves, droughts, and heavy rains) are affecting land degradation processes in all regions of the globe, including flooding, mass movements, soil erosion by water and wind, and salinization.

Climate variability, climate change, and land degradation are closely linked, creating unanticipated impacts, for example, increased occurrence of fires and weather conditions suitable for breeding in the wild in large areas of the world. Sustainable development in countries affected by drought and desertification can only be achieved through concerted efforts based on a correct understanding of the various factors, including climate change, that are causing land degradation worldwide.

Recognizing the importance of climate factors in land degradation, the Seventh Conference of the Parties (COP-7) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNCCD) decided to give priority to climate issues in land degradation in the future work of the Convention’s Committee on Science and Technology (CST) and requested the WMO to organize and finance an international workshop on climate and land degradation in 2006 in the spirit of the implementation of the International Year of Deserts and Desertification (IYDD)In the spirit of the implementation of the International Year of Deserts and Desertification (IYDD).

Against this background, the WMO, the UNCCD Secretariat, and the Tanzania Meteorological Service jointly organized the International Workshop on Climate and Land Degradation in Arusha (Tanzania) from December 11-15, 2006.

About the Book

Based on an international work shop held in Arusha, Tanzania, this book presents state-of-the-art papers, practical applications, and innovative technologies to combat land degradation. It presents recommendations for the effective use of weather and climate information to implement sustainable land management.
